let the band sing on

Went to an Our Lady Peace concert at the Mod club on monday. My friend Adam managed to secure tickets through some means (the mod club seems to old between 700 and 1000 people). Nice small venue, and a kickass concert.

They played a selection of songs from their new album and a good range of songs from their older stuff. The audience seemed quite into it, all in all, a blast.

Picked up the next day, and was quite disheartened (after opening it) to realize it was copy protected. I'm going to have to try to rip it onto my linux box or I won't be able to listen too it at all as I don't have a windows machine nor use a stereo. Else, I'm going to have to go and get it off of bittorrent. It really pisses me off when bands fuck with cds and make me resort to finding it on file sharing sites just to listen too it. It's one of the few things a band I like can do to make me stop buying their albums (the same reason I don't buy Perfect Circle albums anymore).

I know it isn't always the bands fault, it maybe the record company, but still, whats the bloody point of alienating your _fans_.

dust goes flying

Categories: Computers

Had a bit of a scare from my server yesterday. It started throwing all kinds of errors about one of my hard drives. When I unmounted it, it wouldn't mount again, fsck woudn't recognize it and fdisk didn't think it was a drive. Then I noticed another one was gone too. Strangely, both on the same ide channel.

So, I pulled it out of the closet where it sits, took it appart (the Antec case is sweet for getting quick access to everything), swapped the ide cable (and which one was master) and fired her up again. And, presto-chango everything seems to be working again.

No error messages, no funny sounds. I've got it sitting on my desk for a while to make sure it dosen't go nutso again, but hopefully it was just a loose/buggered ide cable.

random drivel….

Categories: Writing

These are a couple of things I wrote a while ago. Figure I may as well stick them here so I don't lose them….

Mmm, it's back again, that impending feeling of dread. The last time we got together I ended up with a bullet in my back and my coffers empty. But damn, she's got the tongue of a serpent, and man can she talk. Anyway, here I am, back at the Black Dawn, drinking my beer. Waiting. She's always late. Always has an excuse. Everyone always believes her.

The darkness shatters as she slips through the door. Heads turn, beers hit the table. What's a dame like that doing in a joint like this? I know, she's here to see me. There's a certain feeling of enjoyment as all heads follow her walking to your table. The soft drum beats of her hips. That slow rhythm and sway, mesmerizing.

I've forgiven the 45 minute wait already.

The wind was howling. Don't know what it was, but that goddamn sound sent shivers up my back. The sound of a thousand fingernails on a chalk board. The night was etched through with silver where the stars could break the cloud cover. Raining. Always, goddamn, raining. I'd been out here three days, waiting, watching, wondering. The last time I'd done this I'd been 18, and it didn't turn out well. I have a feeling this time's a bust too. Those little bastards are elusive.

ticking away…

It's been a while since the last time I wrote in this thing. Lots of stuff going on. Took at trip to Quebec City at the start of August (was on vacation for 2 weeks which was real nice, heh). The trip was good, didn't do any of the tours or that crap, just wandered around the city for a few days, took in some restaurants and some street performers. Got a bit of tail, beaver tail that is. We took the train there and back. The trip there wasn't too back, 7am – 3pm, the trip back on the otherhand was an overnight job so we left Quebec City at 5pm had a 3 hr layover in Montreal then got back to Toronto at 8am the next day. Bloody long time, heh. But, the train ride did give me time to start and finish the last Harry Potter book, which wasn't bad, and to read the first compiled Sin City novel, which was excellent.

After that it's been back to work and trying to get caught up. Managed to read the second compiled Sin City book in there, which was also really good. I'm going through Freakenomics at the moment. It has some really interesting facts and just it's general content is quite compelling to read.

I got the selection code committed to EWL, there are still issues with the way it selects but it seems to be working. I also managed to get a couple little fixes in there so it should feel better when your clicking around on the entry for where it decides to place your cursor. I want to make a few more API changes to get it all nice and pretty but then it will probably be on hold till after textblock2 comes of age. I'll be fixing bugs and little issues, but the main issues will need tb2 and hopefully it's better abilities to tell me where the hell I am. There seems to be a ton of stuff to do in EWL, but finding the time to do it is a bitch and with only two people working on it, it makes it even more difficult.

Been playing a bit of World of Warcraft. Not near when I first started, but its fun to go and drop 3-4 hrs on it just wandering around killing shit, heh. To counter act that, I broke down and got a gym membership again. We'll see how that goes this time….. (although I must admit, I went and used the bike for 35 minutes (20km) last night and then the ski machine for another 18 minutes (2.4km) and it felt pretty good. And, hell, the machines have tvs with headphone jacks built in so you can watch whatever is on basic cable while you use them, heh.
