Sucked back down the rabbit hole

Well, Nathan has done it again and sucked me back into doing Ewl work. I’ve been taking a break for a week or so as I was getting annoyed with various aspects of the Enlightenment project.

I’ve been off playing with OpenSolaris and submitted my second patch. We’ll see if it gets committed.

I’ve also been spending a lot of time playing Crackdown for the 360. It’s a lot of bloody fun. There is just something satisfying about running down criminals at high speeds and tossing grenades on their heads from the rooftops.

Anyway, as I said before, I’m back playing with Ewl. Nathan has been looking at a patch I created to split the Ewl_Text widget into several smaller source files. I commited one part of this previously, the Ewl_Text_Context code. The second part of the split is getting the formatting information into Ewl_Text_Fmt and hide the implementation a lot better. The code is all written, we’re just in the debug state. Nathan has been poking at it and asking me questions over the last week.

Tonight he managed to suck me back in. He tracked down the likely cause of the position counters going negative and I’ve got that part fixed. Other stuff still needs to be fixed up.

The longer you work on a project the more code you invest and the more mental state you invest. That investment makes it hard to sit back and watch as everything gets re-invented over and over again. Poisonious people pop up and drive the desire to work right out. On the other hand, the code’s still there, there are still bugs to fix, and some of the people are really cool. I think, every now and then, you just have to say ‘toss it’ and go away for a while. Just ignore the project. Wait for something to draw you back in and make it interesting again.

It doesn’t take a genius

So I keep seeing news articles on how shows are losing viewers after they take their mid-season break. Jericho had a loss of users, and apparently its now been canceled. Heros also took a drop in viewers after their break so their adding in some six week thingy to fill the gap next season.

Here’s an idea, and it’s even free to you studio types. Drop the fucking break. Simple, eh? You won’t see the user drop as there is no break. I’m sure you’ve got a nice and silly reason for having the break, something about sweeps month or something. Well, guess what, as the networks just change the damn sweeps month. If you feel you always need to break for six weeks to get that last week of sweeps month in there. Move it forward six weeks.

You might even manage to stop pissing us all off. Trying to figure out when your shows come back on the air and having your PVR fuck off so you miss the episode. Which then means you end up skipping the rest of the season as you’ve just missed an episode, hence your drop in viewers.

No, thank you Philips

I heard the add for the new Philips razor on the radio and figured I’d checkout the website. This has to be the funniest advertisment I’ve seen in a long time. shaveeverywhere.com not safe for work.

Sweet christ, that’s good.

Ever since I signed up to the gym I’ve been wanting to get a new pair of headphones. I’ve got a set of Sennheiser’s that I use at work at the moment but they’re a bit big for the gym.

There was a link off of Life Hacker for an article: Earbuds for Fashion and Sound That Adjust So They Don’t Fall Out [NYT]. I checked out the article, check out the Apple Store. Stacy picked me up a pair on her way home from work.

Fucking fantastic.

These things are awsome. I was shaking my head around, enough to throw my glasses across the room and they stayed in. They sound phenomenal. I can turn them up as loud as I want and other people can barely hear them. A real problem with my Sennheisers. The sound is equally great, I can finally listen to Tool loud enough to get all the subtle stuff they stick in there.

So, if you’re looking for new earbuds, check out the Vibe by V-Moda. Highly recommended. (And Gunmetal Black is just a cool colour.)
